EDMONTON – The roaring energy was on full display at Bill Hunter Arena on Saturday afternoon. With the season on the line and the stakes at an absolute peak, the Edmonton Jr. Oilers Blue rose to the occasion, delivering a massive 6-3 victory over the Fort Saskatchewan Rangers to keep their quest for the North Division title alive.
The Rangers looked to end things early by starting goaltender Kasey Fuson, who had been steady all series, but the Oilers Blue refused to be denied. It was a performance defined by energy, teamwork, and an unshakable belief. After a patient start, the Oilers Blue found their stride, treating the home fans to a four-goal second-period explosion that reminded everyone why they are the top seed in the North. The win cuts the series lead to 2-1 and sends Edmonton back to Fort Saskatchewan with all the momentum in the world.
In-Depth Scoring Summary
1st Period
- FTSK (3:45): Emile Plourde (2)
- Assists Alex Letourneau, Nathan Castonguay
- The Play: The Rangers jumped out to an early lead following a clinical transition play. It started when Castonguay found Letourneau with a crisp pass in the neutral zone. Letourneau quickly spotted Plourde streaking into the Oilers’ territory and flicked a lead pass forward into space. Plourde won the footrace to the puck, took it wide to create an angle, and snapped a shot short-side past Berard. At the moment, it was a massive goal that shifted the early momentum in favour of Fort Saskatchewan.
Overall, Fort Sask just seemed like to be playing their game. Junior Oiler Blue hockey just hasn’t felt like it had been played yet, and with great goal tending and collapsing in front of the net, it felt perimeter for the Oilers. Fort Sask played a sneaky first period and found ways to shut down the mighty blue offence. Either way, I still had hope that Blue was going to get back to playing their game and boy oh boy did they.
2nd Period: Blues Hockey
- BLUE (2:25): Sawyer Holmes (1)
- Assists: Jaxson Kobe, Matteo Mannella
- The Play: The rally started here. Holmes capitalized on a beautiful board battle that ended up on Kobe’s stick. Manella and Kobe grinded down low to get Holmes a good shot from the slot. Holmes got a quick release off and a nice bounce as he snuck it past Fuson. Just a huge goal for the Oilers, and no better time for Holmes to get his first playoff goal in a big spot. The barn was rocking. Shouout Sawyer.
- BLUE (8:30): Will Hogan (1)
- Assists: Memphis Adeniken, Casen Vadori
- The Play: In what will likely be remembered as my weirdest goal of the series, Will Hogan gave Edmonton their first lead of the night. Hogan picked up the puck in his own zone and looked to rifle a long-range pass from his own blue line toward Michael Zhao, who was cutting behind the Rangers’ defence. The puck flew all the way down the ice, skipped, and somehow found its way through the legs of Kasey Fuson. While Fuson has been solid all series, this “squeaker” seemed to rattle the Rangers’ netminder and completely shifted the energy in the building.
- BLUE (15:10): Grayson Boe (2)
- Assists: Memphis Adeniken, Jake MacDonald
- The Play: This sequence started with Memphis Adeniken flipping the puck deep into the Rangers’ zone. Both he and Jake MacDonald relentlessly pursued it, forcing a quick play behind the net. MacDonald quickly cycled the puck to the near side for Adeniken, who showed elite composure by waiting for the play to develop. He spotted Grayson Boe trailing into the low slot unmarked and fed him a perfect pass for a heavy one-timer that beat Fuson clean. The patience and determination shown by Adeniken on this play highlighted exactly why he’s considered one of the top playmakers in the league. It was easily one of the loudest moments of the season, with the home fans erupting as the Oilers Blue took a commanding 3-1 lead. Boesy scored another big goal in a big spot. Huge.
FTSK (15:40): Ethan Collins (1)
- Assists: Emmett Jones, Peyton Panich
- The Play: The Rangers quickly quieted the barn by responding just 30 seconds later. Collins flipped the puck around an Oilers defenseman and drove to the far side of the zone. Emmett Jones picked up the loose puck on a 2-on-1 and sent a perfect cross-crease pass back over to Ethan Collins for an empty-net one-timer. Berard had no chance on the play, and it was a tough goal to give up in a moment where Edmonton felt they had full control. It was a massive response that momentarily hushed the building and kept the Rangers within striking distance at 3-2.
- BLUE (17:55): Carter Muench (1) [PP]
- Unassisted
- The Play: With the score tightening, Muench showed incredible hand-eye coordination to intercept a pass by Rangers defenseman Jeremy Moellenbeck. After picking the puck out of the air, he drove hard to the near post, first trying to flick it over Fuson before successfully jamming it through the pads. Muench immediately headed to the boards to celebrate with the Oilers fans on the glass—some of whom had already lost their shirts in the excitement. It was easily one of the biggest goals of the year, providing the vital cushion the Junior Oilers needed heading into the third.
This was the Blues’ biggest period of the season. With their backs against the wall, they found a way to play Blue hockey and put up a four-spot against a Fort Saskatchewan team that seemed to be rolling defensively. A bunch of studs. Blue can break out at any time. Fun team to call, man.
3rd Period
FTSK (7:46): Hunter Colombe (1)
- Assists: Nathan Castonguay, Jeremy Moellenbeck
- The Play: The Rangers refused to go away quietly. After gaining the offensive zone, Moellenbeck zipped a pass across the ice to Castonguay, who hammered a one-timer toward the net. Colombe was perfectly positioned to get his stick on it, tipping the puck up and over the shoulder of Berard to make it 4-3. It was a high-skill play that momentarily silenced the crowd and set the stage for a tense final ten minutes.
- BLUE (18:13): Jake MacDonald (1) [EN]
- Assists: Nathan Guenther, Memphis Adeniken
- BLUE (19:22): Ben Guimaraes (3) [EN]
- Assists: Grayson Boe
- The Play: With the home crowd on their feet, MacDonald and Guimaraes iced the game with empty-netters, officially ensuring the series continues.
Three Stars of the Game
⭐ First Star: Memphis Adeniken (Forward) Stud. Adeniken was the engine of the Oilers’ offence, finishing the night with a massive three-assist performance. His vision in transition allowed Edmonton to bypass the Rangers’ defensive style and made play after play all afternoon.
⭐⭐ Second Star: Carter Muench (Forward) Muench provided the game’s biggest momentum swing. His opportunistic interception and gritty finish at the net front came at a time when the Rangers were pushing hard. His high-energy celebration with the fans on the glass became the defining image of the Oilers’ resilience.
⭐⭐⭐ Third Star: Sawyer Holmes (Forward) Holmes provided the spark that started it all. His early second-period goal broke the ice for the Edmonton offence and proved that they could get past Fuson. His shot set the tone for the “Blue Hockey” that followed.
Honourable Mention: Jake MacDonald (Forward). MacDonald was a tireless worker all night, playing a vital role in the Oilers’ attack. He picked up an assist on the Boe one-timer by beating a defender behind the net and eventually iced the game himself with a composed empty-net goal. His two-point night was exactly the kind of “unsung hero” performance the team needed to stay alive.
