If your heart was pounding in the final minutes of that quarterfinal, you aren’t alone. What was supposed to be a straightforward step toward the podium turned into an absolute slugfest. Canada is officially moving on to the semifinals after a pulse-pounding 4–3 overtime victory over a Czechia team that simply refused to go away.

But this win didn’t come cheap. Between a massive injury scare for the captain and a late-game officiating mess that had everyone screaming at their TVs, Canada’s “perfect” tournament just got a lot more complicated. Canada looks a little banged up, but I am excited to see how they bounce back from this. They needed some pushback at some point, and they rose to the occasion today.

The Breakdown: A Game of Inches

Canada came out flying, but the Czechs had clearly done their homework since the preliminary round. This wasn’t the same team that got shut out a week ago.

  • The Celebrini Spark: Once again, 19-year-old Macklin Celebrini showed he’s built for the big stage. Just three minutes in, he finished off a beautiful feed from Connor McDavid to put Canada up early.
  • The Czech Response: Czechia didn’t blink. David Pastrnak reminded everyone why he’s one of the best snipers on the planet, rifling a shot home to help the Czechs take a shocking 2–1 lead—the first time Canada has trailed all tournament.
  • The Tug-of-War: Nathan MacKinnon levelled things on a second-period power play, but the momentum swung back to the Czechs when Ondrej Palat found the back of the net with less than eight minutes to go in the third. I don’t think I have been more nervous than after the Palat goal
  • The Clutch Tip: With the tournament on the line and the goalie pulled, Nick Suzuki played the hero, redirecting a point shot with just 3:27 remaining to force the extra frame. Suzuki was being called out for a lot of the tournament for his play. But in the big moment, he came up clutch, and he needed to because he missed an empty net earlier in the game.
  • The Marner Magic: In 3-on-3 overtime, Mitch Marner called the game. He picked up the puck, sliced through two defenders with elite edge work, and tucked a backhand into the top shelf to save Canada’s gold medal dreams. Mitchie can’t get much more clutch and overtime winner against Sweden, and then the winner today, some of the biggest goals he’s ever scored. Marner has also had some criticism in the last few games, turning over the puck a lot, but he shows that he is made for moments like this.

The “Six-Man” Controversy

The biggest talking point—other than the score—was the officiating late in the third period. During the sequence leading up to Palat’s 3–2 goal, the Czechs appeared to have six skaters on the ice for a prolonged period during a messy line change.

The Canadian bench was livid, and social media exploded with replays showing the extra man clearly involved in the play. Despite the protests from head coach Jon Cooper, no “too many men” penalty was called. It was a sequence that nearly derailed Canada’s entire Olympic run, and you can bet Hockey Canada will be looking for answers from the IIHF officials.

The Crosby Concern

The victory feels a bit hollow as fans wait for news on Sidney Crosby. Early in the second period, “Sid the Kid” took a heavy hit from Radko Gudas and went down awkwardly. He left the game immediately and did not return. This left the Canadian fans absolutely astonished and started to feel some panic and anger, especially at Radko Gudas.

Coach Cooper was tight-lipped afterward, saying how the guys made sure that this wasn’t his ” last game in the Olympics”. He also said that it is quite unusual for the captain. He did not give any updates on Sidney Crosby, but we expect to get one tomorrow. Many are saying it could be MCL by the looks of it.

Semifinal Outlook: The Finnish Trap

Canada now moves on to face Finland on Friday, February 20, at 10:40 AM ET.

The Scouting Report

  • The Style: Finland is coming off a grinding 3–2 OT win against Switzerland. They play a “suffocating” style of hockey—they don’t give you odd-man rushes, and they thrive on making the game as ugly as possible.
  • The Goalminder: Juuse Saros has been a human eraser in this tournament. Canada won’t be able to rely on pretty plays; they’ll need to crash the net and win the “dirty” goals.
  • The Adjustment: If Crosby is out, expect Bo Horvat or Nick Suzuki to take on massive defensive responsibilities to neutralize Finland’s counter-attack. Both of these guys have looked good as of late, and I really like Bo Horvat’s game. Expect some more depth guys to get some more minutes. Hopefully, Bennett is back the same with Morrissey. As they were out with injuries today.

The Bigger Picture

On the other side of the bracket, the USA took down Sweden in overtime and will face Slovakia. We are officially one win away from a potential “Gold Medal Edition” of the Canada-USA rivalry.

Canada has shown they can win pretty, and now they’ve shown they can win ugly. Two wins to go. Hockey can’t get much better than this.
