Michael Penix Jr. is out for the season with a knee injury he suffered in the Falcons’ loss to the Panthers on Sunday. He went down in the third quarter after taking a hit right as he threw the ball. He walked off on his own, but you could tell something was really wrong. Reports say he aggravated a bone bruise in his left knee, and there may also be more damage that will require a long recovery. The Falcons placed him on injured reserve and confirmed he will miss the rest of the year.
ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported that Penix is getting a second opinion, but early signs aren’t encouraging at all. The team expected bad news from the start, and now it’s basically confirmed.
Before the injury, Penix had been one of the few positives in what has been a rough season for Atlanta. He has thrown for almost 2,000 yards with 9 touchdowns and 3 interceptions, and has had a couple of games where he really looked like he was settling in as their future starter. But the Falcons are sitting at 3 and 7 and on a long losing streak, so the season was already going sideways even before this.
Now the Falcons turn to Kirk Cousins to finish out the year. He brings experience, but the offence hasn’t looked as explosive without Penix. Their playoff hopes are basically gone, and their rookie quarterback is done for the season, so Atlanta just has to find a way to get through the rest of the schedule and figure out what this means for their future.
Fans are now calling for Morris to be fired because the expectations of the talent of this roster have not been met. The Falcons’ coach time may be ticking.
